The purpose of this restoration was to create a public landscape that harmonized the historic significance of the grounds with 21st century needs. With this project came several challenges, including wheelchair access, space for group gatherings and creating a sense of intimacy. This was achieved by proper grading, widening paths, leaving large open green areas, and surrounding the site with a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees. Also permanent benches and urns were placed on the veranda, near the herb garden and under the pergola.
